FAQ ABOUT OUR MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES
What does the class cover?
It depends on which class you want to take. For those who want to train
"standing up" (punching, kicking, etc.) the student will
be training in Muay Thai. For
those who want to learn how to defend themselves on the ground
(positions, escapes, submission holds, etc.) he student will be training in
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Do you need to be in shape to begin?
No not at all. We like to pride ourselves on getting our students into shape,
after all that's a big reason why many take up martial arts training in
the first place! Don't wait to get into shape before you start learning
martial arts. Start today.
Is martial arts training safe?
Yes absolutely. Safety is our primary concern. Our training program is primarily non-contact for beginners. We use the safest equipment and cut no corners for your safety. Only those who
both want to and have reached a certain skill level are allowed to do contact training.

How long will it take to get good?
It all depends on how often you attend and how dedicated you are. Most students
will see a noticeable difference in their fitness and technical ability
within a few months of training.
What is the belt ranking system in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
The colors of the belt ranking system in BJJ are white, blue, purple,
brown, and black with 4 degrees or "stripes" within each color
before black. This standard is recognized and followed by all BJJ
schools.

Does Muay Thai have a belt ranking system?
There is no universally recognized belt ranking system in Muay Thai. In
Muay Thai there is a saying, "The belt is in the ring!"
However, ranking systems serve as an important goal setting standard and
benchmark for a student's ability. Such a standard is important to help
the student keep track of his or her progress and reward them for their abilities and efforts.
For this reason, it is common to find private ranking systems within
Muay Thai schools. There are gyms throughout the world that have their
own "in-school" ranking systems, and these schools (ours
included) commonly use
colored arm bands called "prajioud" to designate their skill
level. The following colors are a sign of the student's skill level:
-
Yellow Band - Basic, earned after approximately
two to four months. At this level the student has demonstrated proficiency
in the Muay Thai basics, such as the push kick, boxing,
straight knees, elbow strikes and especially the round kick.
The student must be able to throw the round kick with correct
technique and intensity.
-
Green Band - Low Intermediate, earned after
approximately six months from the previous rank. At this level the
student has demonstrated an improved proficiency in the Muay Thai
basics, with special emphasis on improved boxing skills.
-
Blue Band - High Intermediate, earned after about
six months
from the previous rank. At this level the student has demonstrated a
proficiency in all Muay Thai techniques and is able to smoothly
execute punch-kick-knee-elbow combinations.
-
Red Band - Advanced, earned after about six months from the previous rank. At this level the student has a
proficiency
and fitness level sufficient to compete in a Muay Thai match.
-
Red and Black Band - Fighter, This rank is for a
student who chooses to be a competitive fighter and is earned after
he or she has competed in a match. This level is optional.
-
Black Band - Instructor, At this level one is certified as an instructor, and is thus able to teach Muay Thai on his or her own.
Again, one must keep in mind that in Muay Thai there is
no universally recognized ranking system and any individual school's
ranking system only has significance within that school or its
affiliates.
What do I wear and what gear do I need?
For starters, just wear some comfortable
t-shirt and shorts/workout clothes. Eventually you will need a jiu jitsu gi (pronounced "gee" with a hard
"g"), MMA training gloves, and a school shirt depending on
which classes you take.
Why is your tuition more than the school down the
street?
Most schools charge what they think they are worth. We could charge
less, but quality, safety and individual attention is what separates us from the cheaper schools. Our program is for
those who want the very best for themselves and for their
children. It is rare to find instructors that can match our
experience and background, and our students are able to benefit more
because of that experience. Just like private academic institutions and
universities are there for a certain group of people who want the best
academic education, in a similar way our program is for those who want
the safest and most professional service available for their martial
arts training.
Can I just
come to watch a practice?
Of course.
