We offer classes in the two most
exciting arts of the 21st century - Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Students can take either one or both of these classes.
MUAY THAI - also known as "Thai Boxing" is a martial art
originally practiced in Thailand. Muay Thai is a stand-up style of striking
that uses kicks, punches, knees, and elbows to strike an attacker. Practicing Muay Thai is a vigorous workout and produces tremendous cardiovascular
endurance (which is great for those who are
doing martial arts for fitness reasons). Practitioners learn about thirty basic techniques, mostly practiced by
striking padded targets. Muay Thai's effectiveness is well-known. Muay Thai is best known for its shin
strikes and the characteristic Muay Thai round kick is delivered by
striking with the shin. There are no forms in Muay Thai, rather, other
more realistic and "dynamic" forms of training are used.
"Thai pad" training is the cornerstone of Muay Thai conditioning that involves practicing punches,
kicks
and elbow
strikes with a trainer wearing thick pads covering the forearms
and hands. Although a ring sport in Thailand, Muay Thai
is a very effective form of self defense outside the ring and is a great
choice even for those who may not wish compete in a sport, but are still looking for
an excellent form of self defense and a great workout.
BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), sometimes
called Gracie Jiu Jitsu, is a martial art that was developed in Brazil by
Gracie family in the mid 20th century. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was originally
based on the Japanese martial arts of Judo and Jiu-jitsu, but took on a
relatively independent form of its own in Brazil and is now well recognized to
be one of the most effective ways of defending oneself in the world. Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu has a large emphasis on grappling and groundfighting, which is a crucial
area since so many real life self defense situations lock up in a clinch and
then end up being a struggle on the ground. The goal of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is
gaining a dominant position so that one can force an attacker to submit to a
joint lock or other submission technique. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art
for everyone, but is especially useful to those who are relatively smaller, since by using leverage and proper technique,
one can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on
performance when it comes to achieving higher belt rankings.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS - Mixed Martial Arts" or MMA is
simply a hybrid system of combining different martial arts into one
program. By training in both Muay Thai and
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students can enjoy a program that produces a
well-rounded martial artist who is skilled in dealing with both
"stand-up" and "groundfighting" confrontations.
